From backyard gardens, to wild places, lovers of art and the natural world have long fashioned miniature dwelling places for Fairies and other nature spirits. Whether whimsical or deeply metaphysical, these creations offer a home for the mythic imagination, a place for magic to emerge from the ecosystem and create a gateway to allow enchantment to pass into our lives.
In the Fairy House Adventure workshop, we will gather twigs, stones, and sand, engaging the spirit energy of each in conversation and discovering how the spirit guardians of different materials guard the gateway to home. We will bring our materials back to the studio and fashion a house, working to keep alive the life history of the twigs and stones of which it is constructed. We’ll learn John Crawford's unique sculptural process of working in a bed of sand to mold the walls, using the twigs as a form; then we’ll form the roof from real shake shingles.
When the structure of the house is finished, we’ll call the guardian spirits of the wood and stone that have shaped it and ask them to whisper their memories to us. With their input, we’ll write a brief story, poem, or song, planting the seed of the living myth that is our Fairy House, our own Nature Spirit Home.
