More Details

The Riversong Sanctuary is a beautiful site for the Congress. Riversong is bordered on one side by a wild stretch of Hood River, which drains the north slopes of Mt. Hood, the tallest mountain in Oregon at 11,240 feet. The town of Hood River is known as the wind-surfing capital of the world since it is located in the middle of the Columbia River gorge where it cuts its way through the Cascades. The wind whistles thru this lowest gap in the whole Cascades making for great wind surfing on the wide Columbia River. We will be in the territory of the Devas of the Columbia Gorge, the Columbia River, the Cascade Mountains, Mt. Hood and the Hood River. Riversong Sanctuary is situated in an old oak forest wherein we will hold this gathering. Located midway through the Cascades, Hood River valley has characteristics of the western maritime climate and the hotter-dryer interior climate. Elements of the floras of both climates live at Riversong. In June it will be lush, green and many flowers will be blooming.

Site facilities: Riversong's facilities include a beautiful, new 41-foot diameter sanctuary which will be our fairy art gallery and a workshop space. The Sky Lodge is a beautiful, winged structure, somewhat akin to a flattened out tipi. It is 54 feet across, 2200 square feet and can hold hundreds of people. We will have a large, roofed, outdoor kitchen to prepare our community meals. Many Congress activities take place outdoors.

Camping: This is a camp out event. So come prepared with tent, padding, bedding, flashlight and camping accoutrements. People can come in live-in vans, campers or RVs.

Motels: Let us know if you would like a list of local motels and bed & breakfasts.

Weather: Long-range weather forecasting for our mountainous location is unpredictable. Our 2001 Congress weather was dry and warm. The 2002 Congress weather was hotter and dryer until Sunday evening when we were treated to a spectacular lightning and thunder storm, high wind gusts (which send a number of tents flying) and some short spells of heavy rain. It was hot and dry in 2003. We advise coming ready for hot daytime temperatures and cool nights. Rain is possible, but since we are on the dry eastern side of the Cascades is seldom rains for long at this time of year. Bring appropriate clothing.

About Food: Participants are requested to bring food to donate to the common kitchen, which will then feed all of us. We especially appreciate people bringing food from their gardens, orchards and wildcrafting. Lots of fresh greens, vegetables, strawberries, cherries, fruit, seaweed, nuts, seeds, sprouts, other tasty and healthful foods. If you go shopping for your food contribution, organic food is preferred.

Water: There is a deep well at Riversong which will provide water for drinking, cooking, cleaning and showers. The Hood River runs adjacent to the congress site so we have a great place to cool off!

The Fairy Parade was one of the highlights of the 2003 congress. Almost every participant was there and most of them with costumes or dressed up. Hard to say who enjoyed it the most - the children, the adults or the fairies. So plan ahead. What would you like to be in the parade? Bring costume stuff to wear and share.

Music and dancing: Bring musical instruments and drums, your voices and songs to share. Music, singing and dancing happen at many planned and spontaneous times during the Congress. We will do some "Dances of Universal Peace".

The Fairy Concert follows after the parade. The most musically inclined and bravest of the participants play music and entertain us while the rest dance, sing along or listen.

Fairy Art Gallery: The fairy art gallery is a popular feature of the Congress. We turn Riversong's sanctuary lodge into a gallery of artwork relating to fairies, angels, devas, etc. The gallery includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, jewelry, wings, poems, photos, etc. Everyone is invited to bring something to display - your own or other artists. Bring your art supplies in case you are inspired during the gathering!

Cooperation and Volunteers: The Fairy Congress is a cooperative community. Most of the food prep and cleanup will be done by participants. We are requesting that everyone come prepared to help.

Healing Area: We set up a quiet retreat area for reiki, massage, and healing treatments. The space is open for people to give or receive treatments. Massage tables appreciated.

Kid's Fairy Realm: The children had a wonderful time last year. This year we wish to have even more emphasis on the children including workshops and puppetry.
