A Fairy in the Land of Music - by Normus

I will now give you the story of what happened when my new human friend, Rudolph, who himself is a fine musician, came with me. When we arrived in the Thormis sector, we were greeted by a paeon of sound which filled me with energy and an eagerness for whatever was to befall me. The notes were coming from each blade of grass and every leaf in the landscape. At that particular level each leaf or flower has only one note which it gives out intermittently. You might think that millions of notes, all being produced together would make a discordant noise, but that is not so. The sound is sweet and gay, a kind of melodious laughter which made me want to sing with them. I added my note to theirs, and instantly those near me increased in volume to match my louder tone.
I moved about, sometimes running along the ground and at others rushing through the air, which was sending out a continous whisper, its millions of particles producing a faint, musical breath.
Soon we were surrounded by Thormes, from the very young, who, like the flowers, produced their note intermittently, to much older ones, who surrounded us with a rising crescendo of continous sound.
They carried us away to a higher sphere where those who were manifesting were not wholly occupied with the production of their own note, but had also found their colour. At present it was but faint but its introduction added immeasurably to the happiness of all. On, on we flew until the colour disappeared and a certain amount of form took its place. It was vague and shadowy, somewhat like an out-of-focus film, but at least a new idea of expression was being tried.
We were escorted in turn to other sectors where vibration, scent and increased consciousness became apparent and finally we came to the one which naturally interests me most - the will to evolve. Here the plants were trying experiments - first they would produce a little form, then colour would be added but usually not before the form had been lost.
At the request of my new friends, I singled out several flowers and a shrub and gave them power. Slowly all the component parts came into being at one and the same time, and even after I withdrew the power, the plants maintained their new strength for about half a minute.
We were then taken to a higher sphere where the plants and trees had learned to produce more than one individual note and they were able to play a tune either individually or together, the more advanced the area, the more beautiful the song.
Rudolph then asked me if would like to watch him conduct. Eagerly I assented and he rose high above us and the surrounding scene. Soon the sequence of sound changed entirely. Whereas previously the idea behind the individual or collective compositions had been simple, expressing joy in growth and welcome to their visitors, or gratitude to God for their being, now an altogether more mature idea was being expressed in waves of sound which entered and enthralled me. I know that all in physical bodies hear with their ears, but as you listen to a great piece of music, I feel sure that your other senses must answer the call. Everything in me rose up and entered that magnificent music-mass. I grew in size until I was spreading over as wide an area as possible, so that I could experience the sound to the limit of my capacity. I felt a tremendous strain. It was as though I was stretched beyond endurance and yet the pain was exquisite. I opened a little more and a thunderous, sonorous roar entered me, and yet I somehow managed to retain my consciousness. Yes, little though I am in this body. I overcame that enormous volume of sound and in withstanding it, I tamed it, until it was all sweetness, all docility. I was filled with the thrill of mastership, of my own consciousness, and of the will of something so much larger than myself. It caressed me more blissfully than any embrace I had previously experienced. It filled me with ecstasy, and my thoughts soared to the heavens. I knew peace and contentment unknown to me before, and all this I discovered, not in the arms of a beloved, but in the heart of harmony itself.
